More than three hundred young people took to the streets in Lisbon today, in heavy rain, in a protest for better salaries, also leaving messages for the new government, led by LuÃs Montenegro.
At 3pm, the young people gathered in Rossio and then set off towards the Assembly of the Republic, and not even the rain or wind stopped the protest.
Armed with banners from the CGTP unions, the demonstrators shouted slogans such as: “For the country to move forward, wages must increase” and “The struggle continues in the companies and on the streets”.
Speaking to journalists at the end of the protest, CGTP general secretary Tiago Oliveira said that this “is a demonstration of strength, of determination”.
“We didn’t stand still. These young people have shown determination. They are ready to continue the fight to secure a better future for themselves,” he said.
The demonstration was called by Interjovem, the CGTP’s young workers’ organization, in defence of better working and living conditions, in particular wage increases and shorter working hours.
In addition to the protest in Lisbon, the organization has also scheduled a demonstration for today in Vila Nova de Gaia, in the district of Porto.
These initiatives are also intended to mark National Youth Day, which is being celebrated this Thursday.
