More than 30% of the unemployed in Portugal in the first quarter of this year (116,600) became employed in the second quarter, the National Statistics Institute (INE) announced today.
In the first three months of this year, of the total unemployed, more than half (50.7%), or 192,800 people, remained jobless in the second quarter, while 30.7% (116,600) moved into employment and 18.7% (70,900) became inactive, INE explains.
In the second quarter, 29.7% (54.3 thousand) of the men who were unemployed in the first quarter and 31.5% (62.2 thousand) of the women who were also in this situation had found a job.
The statistics office also states that from the first quarter of this year to the second quarter, “39.9% (96.5 thousand) of the short-term unemployed and 18.8% (27.2 thousand) of the inactive belonging to the ‘potential labor force’ moved into employment”.
At the same time, 11.6% (82.2 thousand) of those who were self-employed and 27.5% (104.6 thousand) of those who were unemployed moved into paid work.
It is also reported that of the total number of employees who, in the first quarter, had a fixed-term or other type of contract, 21.4% (153,500) changed to an open-ended contract in the second quarter of this year.
In addition, of the number of people who had a part-time job in the first quarter, 19.2% (79.6 thousand) went on to work full-time in the second quarter of this year.
INE also explains that the percentage of people who remained employed between the first quarter of this year and the second quarter, but changed jobs, fell by 0.2 percentage points (p.p.) compared to the last quarter, standing at 3.6% (169.4 thousand).
