The complete recovery of suspended service time and the elimination of quotas and vacancies for access to the fifth and seventh grades continue to be the primary causes of yet another teacher strike.

On Monday, teachers in the district of Porto went on strike, marking the beginning of a new round of district strikes that will conclude in Lisbon schools on May 12 with no minimum services.

The complete recovery of suspended service time and the elimination of quotas and vacancies for access to the fifth and seventh grades continue to be the primary causes of yet another teacher strike.

The platform of nine teachers’ union structures, including the National Teachers’ Federation (Fenprof) and the National Education Federation (FNE), has again chosen a district-wide strike as a form of protest.

In contrast to what has occurred in recent months, the ministry did not request minimum services for this district strike.

The strike will begin at 12 p.m. today in Porto, travel through all of Portugal’s districts in reverse alphabetical order from Viseu to Aveiro, and terminate in Lisbon.

The secretary-general of Fenprof stated last week that the government’s plans to rectify the asymmetries caused by the freezing of service time would exclude a greater number of teachers than the unions had anticipated.

Meanwhile, the Union of All Education Professionals (Stop)’s indefinite strike has ended after more than four months of paralysis.

However, Stop has already scheduled a new national strike for April 24, 25, 26, and 28 in opposition to the new competition regime and to once more demand the recovery of all service time.
